Squirrels
NEST sometimes fall to the ground during a storm. If this is the case and you just had a storm, please look around for more squirrels. Place the entire nest next to the tree it may have fallen from. Give the frantic mother time to retrieve her babies. Try to keep all pets and people away and watch from a distance. If you have not seen an adult squirrel rescuing her young within an hour or so, something may be wrong with her. Contact us.
Squirrel Babies
If you come across a baby squirrel on the ground for no apparent reason, look around for other babies. There may or may not be more. Sometimes infants fall from the nest. If you see the nest, please try to place the infant back into that nest. If you can not do this, take the next step. Use a plastic container, like a butter bowl, place a cloth inside and put the infant on top of the cloth.Fill a baggie or a soda bottle with very warm water to place this UNDER the cloth to keep them warm until help arrives. Place the container under the tree. Try to keep all pets and people away and watch from a distance. If you have not seen the adult come to rescue her young, something may be wrong. Please contact us.
As well, if they appear to be very thin and bony, they need help right away. Place them in a cloth lined box or plastic container. Fill a soda bottle with very warm water to place this UNDER the cloth to keep them warm until help arrives.
Adult Squirrel
When you come across an adult squirrel on the ground, please contact us right away! Keep people and pets away and observe from the distance. If you must bring it to the rehabilitator here are some tips. If approachable, use gloves to place into a small box with a lid, with breathing holes. It would be best if you use a cloth or towel to place on the bottom of the container so the squirrel will not be moved around and injured further. Please try not to look it in the eyes, for that is very scary for this squirrel. If NOT approachable, then place a cloth over the squirrel, or not, and wait for help to arrive.
