_ BIRDS
Hatchlings: If you find a baby bird on the ground that has no feathers and/or not too many feathers, something is wrong. It may have fallen from the nest. Can you see the nest? If so maybe you can place the nestling back into the nest. Or, you can make a nest using a small container, like a plastic butter container. Make several holes in the bottom, place some grass inside, along with the baby bird. Hang this on the tree. You can use a nail or place the container at the bottom of that tree. The mother will come for her young. Keep a watch and if she does not come for her baby within the hour, then please contact us. These hatchlings require specialized care for survival. If your bringing the infant to us then place this infant in a small plastic container, like a butter dish. First fill a baggie or a soda bottle with very warm water, then place a soft cloth on top of this water bottle. This insures the infant is not burned. Place the bird on top of that. If you cover the bowl, make certain it has breathing holes on top.
Nestlings:
You may come across a nestling bird that has most of it's feathers, or fuzzy down mixed in with the feathers. The tail has not grown out yet, or is very short. The bird is sitting in one spot. This bird is not ready to leave the nest yet! The nest is usually not too far from where you found it, just a matter of a few feet. If possible, place this bird back into this nest. Or place the nestling in a small container filled with grass and place it at the base of a tree that does have a nest in it. If you cant find the nest, it's possible a predator may have taken it and dropped it on the ground. Keep an eye on it from a distance and keep people and pets away. Hopefully the parent will find her nestling. If after a while and the nestling is still there, it may need help. Until you get help, follow this tip. Place the bird in a small plastic dish. Fill a baggie or a soda bottle with very warm water and cover that with a soft cloth. Place the infant inside. If you cover this container, make several breathing holes on top.
Fledgelings
You may also come across a bird that’s all feathered and just hopping around in the yard. This is called a fledgling and is in training for flight. The mother is watching close by. The adult should be coming around to help her nestling through out the day. You must become diligent to watch for her, for she fly's to her young to offer assistance and/or to offer some food. She does not hang around too long. The nestling is learning as they should be doing, on the ground. If after considerable time, and you don't see the parent at all, then please contact us.
Please try to keep pets and people away. Observe from a distance. If you have not seen a parent flying to it, or helping it in any way within a hour or so, then please contact us.
Adult Birds
Adult birds found on the ground should be called in right away. Contact us and try to keep people and pets away. If your bringing this bird to us, follow this tip. Use gloves to scoop up the bird and place inside a paper bag. It would be nice to place a small cloth in the bottom of this bag first. Staple or tape the bag closed making sure you have made several breathing holes. You can also use a box for the same purpose.
